28mm Industrial Empty 28mm Industrial

Post by Admin Mon Dec 23, 2013 11:54 pm

This table is going to be geared towards the 40K crowd, so not a lot of pieces and some that are typically larger than I have been doing, but enough to fill a 4 * 6 table. So with keeping that in mind here we go.

1/ Walkway set. There will be a ladder section for getting up and down, as well as 'L' and 'T' pieces etc. I'm going to have to make the the brick base wider to make it more stable. But other than that, thoughts on the style in general before I make more?

28mm Industrial Dsc00618

2/ Barricade. Idea here is to do a set of 10, thoughts on the design?

28mm Industrial Dsc00620

3/ Pipes. I wanted to do 'crates' as scatter terrain but not the typical crate so this is what I came up with, this will also be a set maybe 8? I also wanted to have them big enough to give the larger based figs some cover. However I'm not completely sure about the sizes. Thoughts on size and style?

28mm Industrial Dsc00621

4/ Processing plant. I messed up on the roof, the part with the fans will set flush with the main roof and I'm going to make it a bit wider and longer so the fans will be spread out more. Also I want to add some detail to this piece but I'm not sure what. I was thinking a plate design, but I don't want it to look steampunk, any thoughts / ideas?

28mm Industrial Dsc00710

28mm Industrial Dsc00711

28mm Industrial Dsc00713

28mm Industrial Dsc00714

5/Storage Tanks. I'm going to thin down the ladders and the height is the same as the walkways, but other than that, thought on the style, or any other changes?

28mm Industrial Dsc00716

28mm Industrial Dsc00717

28mm Industrial Dsc00718

6/ Cooling Unit. I'm a bit stuck on this one. The flash shows the fan under the grating, but with out it, it's very difficult to see them. I'm thinking I need to get rid of the grating for the lower level and do a grating like on the processing plant out of MDF. Only problem is scale. A fig will sit on it fine because of the base, but the holes would be big enough for a foot to easily fit thorough. Ideas?

28mm Industrial Dsc00719

28mm Industrial Dsc00720

So those are all the pieces. I've got ideas for plenty more but I think this is a good start.

1. Like the walkway design, if a 50mm bonejack can fit then a 40mm Infinity TAG will have no problems, side armour/advertising signs would be a must for cover, now sure how this would fit in with 40k unless you have jump troops? Having this connect to the Processing plant and storage tanks is great.

2. Not sure about the side pattern - If I could see one painted in yellow/black hazard that would help, otherwise just a rectangular cut out would be enough?

3. like the pipes on the left, if they are 25mm high then my 60mm TAG could claim cover and my 28mm mini could still see over the top to shoot.

4. How about de-centralising the walkway access, put in one of your storage tank pipes as a sort of furnace, smoke stack out the top, ref my dice tower, cut in a basic reinforcing pattern on the sides/ends Terrain post # 117

5. Shrinking the height is good, handrail for the lower levels?

6. Like the change of grating to the larger size, I would cut the number of fans down so a 25mm base can move between the fans, assume the fan itself would be dangerous terrain. Can you cut a round hole for the fans?

There will be a ladder piece for regular troops.

bugbait_nz wrote:2. Not sure about the side pattern - If I could see one painted in yellow/black hazard that would help, otherwise just a rectangular cut out would be enough?

So the roundness of the ends is what doesn't quite look right?

bugbait_nz wrote:4. How about de-centralising the walkway access, put in one of your storage tank pipes as a sort of furnace, smoke stack out the top, ref my dice tower, cut in a basic reinforcing pattern on the sides/ends Terrain post # 117

The reinforcement pattern is great idea! BTW your dice tower came out great, might have to steal that idea Very Happy The problem with the pipe is that's the smallest height they come in, and they are a bitch to cut, let alone cut straight. I'm tying to keep it simple for the end user to put together. Which is a challenge in and of it's self. If this was just terrain for me, I'd be doing it differently, but since it's a kit for someone else, I have to try and keep it as simple as possible.

bugbait_nz wrote: Shrinking the height is good, handrail for the lower levels?

The angle I took the pics make them look a little higher than they are, but they are still pretty tall, but again same issue as above with the pipe. I'd thought about the hand rails but wasn't sure if it would be too much...

bugbait_nz wrote: I would cut the number of fans down so a 25mm base can move between the fans, assume the fan itself would be dangerous terrain. Can you cut a round hole for the fans?
Humm.... didn't really consider it dangerous terrain, more of a Marilyn Monroe blowing up your skirt kind of thing, lol. And yeah I can do round.

Thanks Bugbait!

2. yes, the rounded ends look strange without paint.

3. cutting pipe straight, gets some sticky tape, stick it to the pipe so that the ends of the tape meet perfectly, this is your guide, do a partial cut through the pipe all the way around, then just finish it off, sand flat with some sand paper that is laid flat on a hard surface and drag the pipe across it, I did this for some Ork wheels and its not too labour intensive -> pipe wheels I guess keeping it simple and quick is a high priority!

7/ Barrier Mark II. Thoughts?

8/ Elbow Walk Way

28mm Industrial Dsc00722

9/ Ladder Platform. The idea here is to be able to place it any where there is a walkway / level with the granny grating to provide a way up.

7. mark 2 barrier, not as good, can you make the short edge of the cutout parallel to the ground?

8. that looks good! is it clumsy gamer proof/not fragile

9. also looks good.

is this designed to be glued together of to disassemble for transport?

Not sure I'm on the same page here. The rectangle cut outs are on a 45 degree angle, are you saying rotate to them to 90 degrees?

bugbait_nz wrote:is it clumsy gamer proof/not fragile

As much as it can be not being glued to the table Very Happy, the longer foot print on the bases really shored it up.

bugbait_nz wrote:is this designed to be glued together of to disassemble for transport?

Permanently glued together, only way it will be stable enough.

7. keep the 45 angle, but the small ends are currently at 90 degrees, change that to 135 degrees so they are parallel to the ground.

10/ Barrier Mark III. Thoughts?

28mm Industrial Dsc00810

Ok so this is starting to piss me off....

I re-designed the deck of the fan platform, and you still cant see the fans  Mad

28mm Industrial Dsc00811

But then it hit me, what if I put the fans on top?

28mm Industrial Dsc00812

11/ So here's the list of questions. How's it look? Anyone have a better idea? Should I add more MDF rings and raise it up some so it provides partial cover? Should I leave the grid patter on the deck or just cut it out completely?

Also if I leave them on top, I'll spread them out more so there is more room for the figs.

Liked the pdf reinforced wall design, enough without going overboard, I liked #2 with the 45 degree extras in the corners.

10. LOVE it!

11. Fans, I paint my fans RED with the leading edge of the blade weathered with Boltgun metallic on a black background, they be seen easy enough through the grills, Im guessing your ones would be the same.
or
Ditch the gill and instead make a raised section that the fan sits in, 15mm ish high tube, keeps minis out AND can be easily seen.

Do you have to factor laser time when you make these things? do lasers have a life of 'x' hours?

11/ So I painted the fan red to see what the result would be and you still can't really see it. Although I did figure out why. Because of the thickness of the mdf it casts a shadow just enough to cover that size of a square.

28mm Industrial Dsc00813

So... I made the grating bigger

28mm Industrial Dsc00814

At this point I'm starting to lean towards the fans on top like the above picture. The problem is the size that the fan platform is becoming. Another consideration for this is shipping, and if I do the fans on top with the larger over all platform it's not going to fit into the medium flat rate boxes. But on the other hand if it's not a good piece of terrain people won't want it anyway. Thoughts?

12/ Looking back over my walkways two things are bothering me a bit. For the original ladder set I didn't do the 'X' next to the ladders, I cut a test piece with them in. Preferences?

28mm Industrial Dsc00815

28mm Industrial Dsc00816

13/ For the 90 degree walkway piece, the small brick support in the corner. Leave it as is, or make it bigger to match the other 2? Stability isn't a issue, and I would lose space for figs to pass through but does it look odd since the other ones are bigger?

28mm Industrial Dsc00817

bugbait_nz wrote:Do you have to factor laser time when you make these things? do lasers have a life of 'x' hours?

Most engraving / lasers companies charge $1 per minute of laser time. But when it can take 30 - 45 minutes to cut out a piece that's unrealistic for this market. So, I look at the time it takes for the laser to run as a labor charge and use that to determine the cost of a piece.

11. can the fan section be split down the middle to make postage easier.
Have you tried red fans on a black background under the grill?
If it still isn't easily seen then you have run out of options, they need to be on top if you are going to have them in the kit.
I still like the idea of having them in a tube section so stupid maintenance people cant fall in.

12 I still like the original, but either is good.

13, Not fond of the brick pattern, I would paint it like a big slab of concrete, but I do like the smaller size, for all supports even.

13b I like both sizes of pipe crates but prefer the larger size, wondering if the pipes need to be separated or just dumped in?

11/ Splitting isn't going to cut it, all puns intended Very Happy

13/ I was envisioning a cinderblock  patter when I did it.

13b/ ohhh I like the idea of a tip over crate with the pipes ever where.

14/ Well... This looks a pants ton better. You rock Bug! Only question becomes is do I add rings around the fans on the top or not?

NICE!
We have a theme so I think you need to continue it on the top fan section, rings and rectangular box around the whole section.

I like option 1 with the extra height (and cover) if you are worried about total width (postage size) you could trim the sides of the main base, so the only way to traverse this structure is to go between the fans.

I came up with a couple of different configurations for the cooling towers. Like anyone in particular?

28mm Industrial DSC01137-001_zps08a3b9a1

I think the platform itself might need some detail but I don't know what. Also I'm thinking about extending the the top walkway across the entire back width of the platform. Thoughts?

Love the bottom right cooling tower!! (probably the hardest to make!)
Detail - have a look at my TG Fortress use the same reinforcing pattern you did for the last piece and cross hatch between the pattern for non slip surface.

Long story short (if that's possible for me, lol) when I looked at your TG Fortress it dawned on me that I  didn't have to have open space under the grating, so with that in mind I started to re-work the fan platform and came up with this:

28mm Industrial Dsc01210

28mm Industrial Dsc01211

I have to say I'm pretty pleased with it.

For the storage tanks, I added some ladders and slimed down the ones I had. I think the number on the tanks add a nice touch but I probably should have put them up a bit higher and wider apart for the ladder but I think you get the idea.

So many ladders, have a look at  Post #191, can you make a little doodad that slots into the ladders?
